In texas hold'em, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the players put out a set amount of cash. 'Posting the blinds' is the frequently used term for this play. In the following step, the dealer shuffles the deck of cards and deals 2 cards face down to all players. A normal deck of 52 cards is used. After the deal, there is the initial round of wagering. This sequence is typically referred to as a "pre-flop".

Following the first betting sequence, the top card of the deck is discarded. This thrown away card is the "burn card", and this is performed to ensure there is definitely no cheating. The next 3 cards are then dealt face up on the poker table. These cards are referred to as 'the flop'. Now follows a 2nd sequence of wagering, after which the croupier throws away a further card and turns over one more card onto the table. After this, competitors can employ the sixth card to create a five-card poker hand.

Another sequence of betting happens, and in a number of styles of poker, here is where the wager size doubles. There is another round of tossing aside a card, and a last deal of a card face-up on the table. This is called the "river". Players can now use any of the five cards on the poker table, and/or the two cards in their pocket, to form a 5card poker hand.
