Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It's a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there's no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high hand, and a few battling for the low.
