Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It's a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It's the same notion in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming array of wagering possibilities and because you have many players battling for the high, along with a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
