Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and lost most times. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.

The actual improvement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently compete against one another. He had access into a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold'em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the best women players the poker world today. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
